Voices of Lighthouses
Paintings by Elaine Marie Austin
September 21 to October 20
Discover the compelling stories within these radiant lighthouse paintings by Lighthouse Artist, Elaine Marie Austin. Like the pulsing rays from the lens, each painting releases the soul of a lighthouse. Her paintings exude peace, beauty and wonder. These evocative, colorful and affordable prints are the result of Elaine Marie’s visits to over 80 lighthouses. The “Voices” exhibit details of some her most memorable experiences through art.
Elaine Marie is a professionally trained artist specializing in oil, pastel, charcoal, graphite, and watercolor media. At the University of Hawaii, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Following graduation, she lived in the Philippines and Italy where she concentrated on painting in oils. Upon returning to the United States, she attended a workshop by Master Artist Harriet Kronick which she considers a turning point in her career. She put away her oil palette for the spontaneity of pastels. As a pastelist, she did commissioned portraits and focused initially on figurative art. A move to Miami Beach caused her to shift to architectural landscapes, influenced by the local preservation movement and the prevalence of that city’s Art Deco buildings. Her love of history and conservation found a new voice and passion. After exhibiting her images of Art Deco buildings, she began painting lighthouses. Her love of lighthouses has changed the way she lives and travels. When not traveling to a lighthouse, she is writing, researching or painting lighthouses.
Coinciding with this exhibit, more of Elaine Marie’s art was exhibited at the National Lighthouse Museum. There, the paintings in the “Shattering the Lens” exhibit shed light on the dynamic impact of female lighthouse keepers.
